The Influence of Starch on the Physical Degradations of Cochineal Oil Paints on a Tin-Based Substrate

The focus of this master’s thesis is the influence of starch on the physical degradation phenomena of cochineal oil paints on a tin substrate. These physical degradations include the formation of deep cracks, unusual sensitivity to aqueous solutions and mild organic solvents, a weathered surface, and crumbling of the paint. To research this, reconstructions of cochineal oil paints with and without starch were created and artificially aged. Subsequently, their degradation phenomena were examined.

This research focused on the application of the Italian restoration technique tratteggio in the Netherlands. The technique received wider recognition and use through Cesare Brandi (1906-1988). However, the Dutch restoration tradition consists mostly of full reintegration of lacunae. This research offers three explanations for the reason why this known restoration technique is rarely applied in the Netherlands.

Tratteggio in Nederland

Het schaarse gebruik van een Italiaanse restauratietechniek.

Tratteggio in the Netherlands

The scarce use of an Italian restoration technique.
